Good point. People with strong opinions often seem to prefer painting the other side as evil, or at least blinded by partisanship, or tools of some special interest rather than merely wrong. Sometimes they are one of those things but I think people leap to such conclusions to easily.

"What does it mean to be a "moderate"?

Moderate" means different things. It can mean you believe some sort of "middle of the road" political positions (although as Jane Gault pointed out determining exactly what is middle of the road can be hard). It can mean "non-partisan" to the extent of being willing to vote for either party. It can mean that you hold your positions with a moderate intensity. It can mean that you are moderate in tone and style and open to new ideas even though you strongly hold some views that might be considered extreme.
