Very interesting piece - made me think about the difference in how kids are treated now compared to our generation (anyone who was a kid pre-1980 or so). Kids today are the ultimate target for protection - they are sheltered, protected, medicated, entertained and scheduled from morning until night. Where our parents would say "Go outside and play!" today's it is play dates and ADHD medicine and DVDs in the back seat of the SUV. I suspect it will breed a new generation of risk-averse types who will burrow deeper and deeper in their safe little suburbs, trying to avoid the world and just fill their Ryland McMansion with more goodies from Best Buy. Call me a cynic. I think this generation is turning out wimps. On purpose, just out of fear.
