The kind of thinking you represent, which I will call the non-Lieberman wing of the Dem party for lack of a better description, is responsible for the Dems' failures. Calling it "marketing" is a cop out, but perhaps it is correct as whatever they are selling, the majority of Americans are not buying.

The Dems have been out of touch. Until someone takes them screaming and yelling on a course to the right, they will continue to lose. Clinton did it brilliantly, but there isn't anyone else left who can, except Lieberman, and he's a bit of a pariah. Installing Dean as head of the Dems was a serious, serious mistake. Complaining about the GOP's this and that is irrelevant unless the Dems change; they seem unwilling or unable to do so, and you can therefore expect more defeats.

I think it's that simple. Hanson had it exactly right. Here is his essay, well worth reading again:
