You think that Bush moved them to the right? Maybe you mean, instead, that Bush moved the country to the right (while he moved the Reps to the left)?

There is a passive voice answer to that. It's that the Reps moved decisively to the right. I preferred that formulation.

Hoever, I had in mind a couple of things. Rove, famously and to switch to a more active voice, on many occassions, apparently, argued that winning national elections was more about getting out the base (which is far right) than about moving to the center (the old Nixon blessed strategy). Thus a move to the farther right.

The contrast with Bush's father, the last Rep president, is telling. The number of "moderate" Republicans in the House and Senate as compared to, say, fifteen to twenty years ago.

I could go on.
