.....However Washington`s strong line against Tehran ran into new opposition Wednesday from Moscow, which has close ties with the Islamic Republic and is helping to build its first nuclear power station near the Gulf port of Bushehr. ?

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that even sanctions against Iran risked being counter-productive. ?

"They never help to find a solution to a problem. Sanctions are just a prelude to further exacerbation," he told a news conference in Vienna. ?

Meanwhile in Moscow, Russia and Iran have confirmed that talks on the Iranian nuclear standoff will be held in Moscow on February 20, an official at the Russian Embassy in Tehran was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency. ?

"The Iranian side delivered its official notification of its arrival on the 20th. It was accepted by the Russian side," Interfax reported Vyacheslav Moshkalo, a counsellor at the Russian Embassy in Tehran as saying. ?

In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview published today that the country need not fear a new war in the Middle East, as she was determined to resolve differences with Iran and other nations peacefully. ?

"Germans should not have any fear. We are without doubt living in a time of fresh conflicts but we are behaving in a firm and responsible manner," Merkel told Stern news magazine. ?

Merkel said she believed there was "a real chance for a negotiated solution" in the West`s standoff with Iran.?
