Santa Fe is actually a spin off of a former Unocal subsidiary. They have been around, I beleive since the early 1950's, and own 1/4 of the world's "harsh environment" rigs, capable of very deep drilling.

Although I don't have their research comment with me, Merrill Lynch is very positive on SDC, and really the entire drilling sector. What does distinguish SDC, however, is their truly international orientation. Their team of engineers is literally a hodgepodge of folks from all corners of the globe. They are a major player in the middle east, and the North Sea.

I've noticed that in their short history as a stand-alone company, their shares tend to be a bit more volatile than their peers. I'm guessing (although I could be full of beans on this) that it's because
their shares are more thinly traded, and thet don't yet have broad institutional sponsorship.

All in all, there's a lot of talking heads in the financial media saying that the drillers are the place to be for the next few years. I hope so.
