I understand the teary eye phenomenon, but it's more about the era, and the ideals that died, then it is about anything that actually got done. (IMO)

I think it's more a generational phenomenon. The later assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were calamitous as well but more mourned by political followers, myself included, than the country at large.

JFK's death was a big event. I suspect that most of my generation and a bit younger can still remember where they were when they learned of his assassination.

Granted that gives a certain hue to his presidency. And that, I assume, is your point. On that, I completely agree.
