As for centrists, since they make up 25-35% of the electorate and the Democrats polled 48% in the last election, obviously a large chunk of centrists do think the Democrats are worth voting for

I agree, but the problem is that on trends analysis, the Dems have not been able to consistently capture enough of the centrists to consistently win the Presidency in the last few decades.

Elections are not like games of horseshoes.

I'm glad to see you agree that the shrill left has hurt the Dems. I would add that the shrill left has hurt the Dems more than the shrill right has hurt the GOP. And the proof is in the results.

I don't know how many times it has been emphasized that presidential politics is about capturing the middle, even if it is by a tiny bit. For whatever reason, the Dems in their primaries give us fools like Dean and Sharpton, folks who the vast middle properly cannot take seriously. They later hurt the ultimate candidate. The fellow from Indiana, whose name I cannot recall, would have made a decent candidate. He was given short shrift in the primaries as Dean's star rose and later fell as quickly as it rose.

Until the Dems learn that they are masters at self-inflicted wounds, they will not do well.
