I won't try to get my arms around all your rambling, but I would suggest thinking back to the bear in the woods metaphor from 1980. Two issues: there is a threat out there, and what are we gonna do about it.

The Rovian twist is that if you don't support everything Bush has done in Iraq and at home, you discount the threat. We have heard that rhetoric here on the thread, who is "serious" or not.

The challenge for Democrats is to come up with a policy that says yes, the threat is serious and we have a serious plan to deal with it. But invading Iraq, torture, rendition and endrunning the Constitution were both unnecessary and dangerous to our security and our democracy.

I don't pretend to have a detailed solution for that dilemma. But those are the questions I expect voters to ask. The quicksand the Dems have to walk is criticizing what Bush has done convincingly without sounding like they discount an issue that voters care about very, very much.

Trying to out rah-rah Bush a la Hillary and Lieberman just creates a me-too candidate whose party has a shaky history on the subject. The Dems need something more positive and pro-active to set their own tone and direction. Otherwise you get the "I voted for it then I voted against it" image.

And it's probably way too early in the presidential election cycle to expect anyone to have that. The herd is just starting to have coffee with the precinct captains in Derry. A lot of networking will precede the big policy talks.
