REPR: Chris, I think REPR's products might help in case of an epidemic also; they shipped product to the Gulf Coast after Katrina. Not as sexy as a vaccine, but in the absence of a preventative, anything to help maintain airway and respiration should be helpful:

PR NEWSWIRE) REPRo-Med Res-Q-Vac to Help Hurricane Survivors

CHESTER, N.Y., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Help is on the way to
some survivors of Hurricane Katrina whose medical treatment was disrupted by
the catastrophe. An emergency order of 2,500 Res-Q-Vac airway suction systems
from REPRo-Med Systems, Inc., (REPR) is being sent to various rescue centers
which have been established for displaced residents.
Res-Q-Vac is an FDA-approved medical device which is used on respiratory
patients, and those with breathing disorders or compromised airways. Without
regular suctioning, these patients would be unable to breathe. The Res-Q-Vac
is unique in that it does not require electricity to operate, is hand-held,
and requires only minimal training. When the hurricane hit, hospitals lost
power and many emergency generators soon ran out of fuel. Without electricity,
medical equipment stopped working, including vital suctioning systems.
REPRo-Med Systems received the order for 2,500 Res-Q-Vac airway suction
systems from Trademark Medical, a specialty manufacturer and distributor in St
Louis, MO.
Res-Q-Vac is available in different configurations to meet the special
needs of each medical specialty, such as emergency services, hospitals,
nursing homes, respiratory, dental, and home care.
The version of Res-Q-Vac which was ordered for hurricane survivors was the
home care kit which has a reusable suction pump, container and appropriate
catheters in a handy carry pouch. This version is ideal for use with patients
on ventilators, tracheotomy patients, respiratory patients and any patients
with breathing disorders or compromised airways.
"We're enormously grateful for the opportunity to provide our life saving
Res-Q-Vac to help the people who suffered through this disaster," commented
Andy Sealfon, President of REPRo-Med Systems, Inc. "We had been in the
process of advising hospitals, nursing homes, and medical first response teams
of the benefits of having a non-electric, effective medical suction to handle
these types of emergencies. As Los Angeles learned just a few days ago when a
large part of the city was blacked-out for several hours, power outages can
occur anytime, anywhere, even without a hurricane. This makes the non-
electric Res-Q-Vac an important part of any emergency response," Sealfon
added.
The optional RES-Q-VAC Full Stop Protection(R) feature is available to
protect health care providers who treat patients who may be contagious. Full
Stop Protection prevents the spread of disease and meets the guidelines of the
Centers for Disease control as well as OSHA regulations relating to
controlling the spread of infectious diseases. Hospitals, nursing homes, and
all emergency services can benefit from the RES-Q-VAC's versatility (tiny
catheters for delivering babies to large bore adult suction), reliability,
performance, and safety.
REPRo-Med Systems, Inc., manufacturer of the RES-Q-VAC designs and
manufactures innovative medical devices directing its resources to the global
markets for emergency medical products leading with its Res-Q-Vac Airway
Suction System and infusion therapy with its Freedom60 Syringe Infusion
Systems. These cutting edge products improve the quality of health care while
maintaining favorable operational costs. For further information, visit our
