Former British corporation P&O, which was bought out by Dubai-owned Dubai Ports World, acts as terminal operator and stevedore in 7 US ports. When I say "Dubai-owned" I mean owned by the "country" of Dubai.

Dubai is a "country" in name only. In reality, it's a consortium of rich Arab sheiks with zero oversight. The "country" has a long track record of facilitating terrorists and hampering investigations into terrorism.

Stevedores load and unload ships. The longshoremen actually do the work, the stevedores are the managers.

The ships come from all over the world, carrying cargo locked up in containers that have been sealed, and nobody actually knows what's in them, we just have to trust the bills of lading.

The Coast Guard inspects about 5% of containers. The rest of them, the Coast Guard goes by the bills of lading and the seals.

Both bills of lading and seals can be forged. It happens all the time. In fact, the vulnerability of our ports is a national disgrace as it is.

The stevedore and the longshoremen are our only real defense against the transhipment of contraband, drugs, and WMD.

To put it in terms you might understand, imagine that the country of Pakistan was put in charge of Indian port security.

Or that Saudi Arabia was put in charge of Danish port security.
