Jim,

last Friday I found that link on A flu I was looking for and wanted to get to you. Now that (Italian) server is turned down for overload reasons but is said to be up again in a week...

Anyway, the story goes that so far bird flu virus is known to need to make the way via pigs to become groomed for the human to human contagious jump. Sure some theories have come up that this may be possible to happen in the humans as well but so far that hasn't been the case.
That would thus call for a H1N1/2 or H2N1/2 type virus to meet the a priori expectations to make the transition from a bird-to-human only to a bird-to-human-to human contagious virus. At the same time that would make it less likely that a H5N1 virus like the current one would ever be able to "mutate" to a pandemical style virus.

I will look for the link a get it to you when I find it. Still have the link and will send it to you but the server is down.
