If it were possible to just be dropped into these areas, I'd love to see them and meet the people. You're right...that was a beautiful shift she had on! But it's the "gutters" of getting to some of the places that I was referring to...not the actual sites.
Most of those sites aren't that bad to get to. You can drive to, take a bus to, or a bus tour to Palenque from Villahermosa. You can fly to Villahermosa from Mexico City which is easy to reach from anywhere in the US. (Teotihuacan, AKA "the pyramids", are just outside Mexico City and are not to be missed!) The hotels in Villahormosa aren't great, but are doable.
To get to Calakmul, you'd stay in Chetumal on the Mexico-Belize border. The Holiday Inn is the only hotel worth considering there.
BTW, speaking of Mexico...Have you been to see the people who make these?

Haven't been in Nayarit. We have been in Jalisco, the state to the south of it. Guadalajara (SMOG ALERT!), the 2nd largest city in Mexico, is in Jalisco. So is Puerto Vallarta.
That sort of clorful, almost gaudy, style is found in many parts of Mexico. The state of Oaxaca is one and it has numerous archaeological site such as Mitla and Monte Alban. |
