That statement by the Rolling Stone was made after the medical community (and probably some advertisers) pressured the magazine.

Certainly the theory that Koprowski inadvertently exposed man to a monkey virus and created AIDs is far from proven. Still, there are a number of actions by Korprowski and key researchers that clearly indicate that they are lying about methods and procedures used during the oral inoculation of 1 million in the Belgian Congo in the late 50's. Records and actual statements by lab personnel and senior researchers contradict the official position of Koprowski and Osterhaus. They did make tissue culture in the Congo, they did keep a remote farm to harvest chimp organs, and they did have locals fill small vials from large tanks of oral polio vaccine.

One of the most amazing things is that Dr. Sabin wrote a letter to Koprowski in the 50's informing him that he had found an additional, and unknown, virus in Koprowski's vaccine. Koprowski's response is not exact what you would expect from a leader in science.

I'm a betting man, and I wager than in 10 years the truth will be known about what happened. Finding some original vaccine actually in use during that effort could answer that question.

An amazing amount of effort by the medical community to disprove this idea that Koprowski "caused" AIDS. No one likes to see one of their heros vilified.
