Port security is at the top of my list of concerns WRT our national security. The borders (and trucking) and port security (which includes the issue of how to limit the dangers posed by container freight) are at tge very top of my list.

My problem with the ownership are many fold. Firstly, it looks terrible. Cosmetic problems are not simply cosmetic problems- they create realities in and of themselves. I think most people will not know about port security- and they won't understand that things will pretty much continue as they are now- and that creates the idea, the appearance, that we are cavalier about our ports. I think that appearance of things plays to the rest of the world as well as here at home. I think now that this has been made an issue of, we need to show we are serious about our ports- because the decision itself has become a security issue.

My second problem is that in the best families all over the ME there are people who are sympathetic to AQ. I don't think that problem can be overlooked. Clearly owners and their agents would have the ability to move about the ports freely- and while superficially the government of Dubai is friendly, beneath the surface in most of these dictatorships there is some faction (or more than one) of militants struggling to throw out the "corrupt" leaders.

I wonder how much most people know about the UAE. They are criticized by human rights groups, they have no political parties, and they have a huge population of foreign workers from all over the ME. Now as far as I understand Mr. Bush democracy is super important to him- and yet he is rushing to give this deal his ok even though it's with an antidemocratic country accused of many human rights violations. I can't remember if Bush came out for the China deal that got squashed not too long ago (where China withdrew its bid)- but FWIW I thought that deal should not have gone through either.
