The govt may have done its due diligence but as rummy admitted, the higher ups may have been presented with a fait accompli before they could judge the political fallout. Many good projects get the kabosh if they are not popular. I dont know if this is more good than bad but it will never be popular and now the dems have the so-called high ground on security matters and republican congressment rush to do damage control. It is the way it is.

PS Bush folks just said he was unaware until AFTER the deal was done and that congress should have been briefed BEFORE it was announced. Veto threat left off this time.
