Hear me out, Ten. It does sound wacky. However, Hamas is ALREADY armed. The reason why peace has never been achieved in Palestine is because there are a hundred armed militias in there. Since Hamas has just been elected, they have the best chance in 50 years to bring all armed factions under one umbrella. If they can do that, then you have a negotiating partner. Now there is that little problem of Hamas being dedicated to the destruction of Israel. However, I think they would come around eventually. But a Palestinian army lead by the government would be a tremendous leap towards a Palestinian state, which would once and for all give the Palestinians what they've been fighting for all these years. Then the onus would be on the Palestinians to prove that they are capable of civilized behavior. It's sort of like giving people enough rope. Either they hang themselves with it or they surprise you. Either way, you come out the winner.

As far as funding Hamas, I don't really think we should be funding Hamas either. But I also think that our diplomatic tack has been stupid. Calling for them to disarm and saying we won't deal with Hamas, which is one of the first Democratically elected governments in the region. Just plain stupid. It closes the door on all of our options and makes Bush's push for Democracy look like what it is...hypocracy. Yet again, Bush has proven that he is just like Arafat, never losing an opportunity to lose an opportunity.
