te,

Absolutely agree. The fact that one of the responses to the claims against Koprowski was an attempt to prove that the first AIDS case happened in 1932. It appears that this effort did not stand up to scrutiny.

I'm not certain what you are referring to when you mention the first AIDS death. Here is the best information I know about the first incidence of the AIDS virus.

Three of the earliest known instances of HIV infection are as follows:

A plasma sample taken in 1959 from an adult male living in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
HIV found in tissue samples from an American teenager who died in St. Louis in 1969.
HIV found in tissue samples from a Norwegian sailor who died around 1976.

This is an interesting site if you want a nutshell of the ideas about the origin. I find two things very interesting. First, there is now little debate that HIV originated from SIV. And second this little tidbit:

In February 1999 a group of researchers from the University of Alabama1 announced that they had found a type of SIVcpz that was almost identical to HIV-1. This particular strain was identified in a frozen sample taken from a sub-group of chimpanzees known as Pan troglodytes troglodytes, which were once common in west-central Africa.

Which fits fairly well with the oral Koprowski theory in the area formerly known as the Belgian Congo.
