Actually, as I remember the story, there was video evidence of the store chain bleaching meat. At that point, with the expiration date and the appearance of the meat being fradulent, I guess you could always put down the symptoms your child is having to the flu and go along your merry way.

You have wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much faith in the civil justice system. Stores don't care about a handful of irate or even sick customers. It's a cost/benefit analysis for them.

When was the last time you received top notch service at every store you visited in a week? Heck, if you live in some areas you have only one store to go to anyway. At that point, it's customers=0, store=100.
