General

In section, two zones are described - the outer zone or Cortical zone and the inner zone or Medullary zone (zona vasculosa). The ovary is covered by continuous layer of simple squamous or simple cuboidal cells termed Germinal Epithelium. This is not the source of the germ cells but is actually peritoneal membrane covering organ.

Cortex

Tunica Albuginea
Deep to epithelium - a thin layer of dense connective tissue.
Mainly rather primitive looking connective tissue
meshwork present with spindle-shaped cells
follicles containing oocytes contained in this stroma
present in a wide range of size orepresenting various stages of development
