Quiet night; I'll post an update with some comments on my "food" stocks. Fwiw.

In no particular order:

ADM: corn and ethanol. yes!

FDP: Pineapples, bananas not doing well. Stock has dropped. I'm holding, not adding. Forbes column recently said, "Fresh Del Monte Produce (nyse: FDP - news - people ), a Cayman Islands-based company that sells fruits and vegetables, is selling at its lowest levels in two years. Gurus added to their holdings of the company last week, unfazed by the company's December warning that weak demand for pineapples would take a bite out of profits. The stock trades for $23, or 10.3 times trailing earnings, and Del Monte announces fourth quarter results next week."

GKIS: broilers. Stock's dropped from recent highs; I'm holding.
IBA: Mexican poultry play.

GMK. Just what I like: Something that seems to be simple: tortillas. And something with a moat: They dominate. Ah, if only I had bought large two years ago.

I recently added a little more.

SFD: Pork. I'm adding shares occasionally at under $30.

BGF: Niche little food co. Stock trades as an "Enhanced Income Security" in which a bond is attached to the stock. The yield is part div., part bond interest.

Nicotine: RAI, MO, AOI, UST. Recently bought a little UST. In past, every time I've bought, I've scared myself out. Nervous now too about UST.

Benefit of having small - very small - positions in stocks like RAI, MO is that it's not easy to get shook out of positions with scary news of government laws, lawsuits, etc. because one doesn't have a lot of money at risk in the investments. Of course, drawback is when/if the stocks rise, profits aren't by themselves, substantial to the portfolio either.

Leaf tobacco seller AOI was formed with the merger of two competing companies. I bought, believing resulting company would do well. Not so. Loss after loss, and the stock's down. I'll hold for another year to see what happens.

KFT: Kraft. I'll add more if stock drops to new low.

Cola: Holding KO and still FMX too. Surprising (to me) stock performance results from FMX.

"Adult beverages" -g-. Figuring on holding STZ for a while. Recently added PDRDY.pk (Pernod) I like companies with these kinds of world-wide brands. (DEO on my watch list.)

pernod-ricard.com

NSRGY: (Nestle) Still holding all shares.
TR (Tootsie Roll): Underwater on this one. Company has good long term success record: I'll hold on.

SLE (Sara Lee): Company continues to struggle. Not sure about this one. Dividend looks okay, stock is down. Not sure how management are going to improve the business or if they can, so not sure if I'll stick with it.

Suppliments: not doing well with the two companies I bought stock in. Still holding NUTR.

grocery: holding ABS and WMT.

distributors: holding CENT (stub), PFGC and SYY. Adding to SYY as it drops. Not confident with PFGC; I may sell.

food equipment: GAI. Cash-in-search-of-a-business

farm machinery: GEHL. Outsiders tried to pressure insiders to sell or improve stock performance. Insiders rebuffed purchase offer(s), and I bought (end of 2001)and later, and still have shares.
