I have no idea what your problem is here. "Great" here means important or considerable. It does not mean we valued his politics or his person other than that he served to advance U.S. interests. The Middle East is critical to U.S. interests in many many ways.

Stalin was also a great ally in WW11, in spite he was a despicable excuse for a man.

You want to start playing word games again, Tim--play them with someone else. I said that "Saddam was a great ally not so very long ago". This is hardly something to argue over. You can pick up any encyclopedia and read about it.
