Pat, good clean points. Definitely emotionally charged. I am no where near ready to pull emotions out of the equation. The wounds are still quite fresh after 5 years. To me, the point seems clear. UAE seems friendly to terrorist enemies. . . .so the friends of our enemies are our enemies. The fact that UAE has turned their entire country into Disneyland and embraced capitalism with a fervor should have no bearing on relations.

The white house has traditionally worked to keep the peace with as many nations as possible. It is just that there are certain nations we should never trust blindly. The cost is simply too great.

Build trust on one hand, to kill with the other. Isn't that the way our soldiers often die in the streets of Iraq? I wonder how often shots come from children. . . or guns are hidden under the robes of the women. Trust is certainly a two way street. But it is also earned. Throughout the Arab world, from Saudi Arabia to Egypt to North Africa. . . the U.S. keeps falling for traps. Who can say with any degree of certainty that allowing a UAE firm to manage our most important ports isn't falling for a major trap?

It is complicated for sure.
