Peter, The habitat for wild life is being taken over by the urban sprawl all over the nation. The contractors don't care what happens as long as they get their money. As a result, more and more, species are bordering on extinction. Even though I don't like snakes, or spiders, they are part of the ecosystem of the earth, and for species to disappear because of the greed of man, bothers me greatly.

Back in 97, I lived across a rural road from a cow pasture that also was the home for many of the usual species in that area of Texas. Suddenly, the owner of the cows, and the land, sold it to a contractor. The acreage was fairly forested, but the contractor bull dozed every tree, and burned them without any consideration of using it for lumber. Then as he built houses, he had some sickly looking, young trees planted, and thought he was doing nature a favor. That is almost criminal IMO.

IN Florida, the building rage is making the state connected by concrete from east to west, and south to north. Now there are reports of bears, coyotes, panthers, deer, and alligators, going into the new subdivisions, and the people wonder why such a thing is happening. It's because they have squatted on the land of those animals, but they are too dumb to realize it, or they just don't care.
