re: How low of a profile is strictly dependent on the combatants. I suspect strongly that as soon as one side or the other gains a decisive upper hand, they will turn their attentions to those bases. Because they certainly seem like the US is planning on being in Iraq for the long haul. We've spent too many billions on them to just hand over control and just march out.
