NEW YORK, Sept 18 (Reuter) - Computer networking company
3Com Corp said Thursday it is in late-stage talks regarding an
agreement to be a key supplier of network interface cards to
Compaq Computer Corp . 3Com said the talks relate specifically to Compaq's
configure-to-order program, the company's effort to complement
its retail sales approach with a more direct model along the
lines of those used by Dell Computer Corp and Gateway2000 Inc .
3Com said it would provide more details on a conference
call scheduled for Tuesday, September 23. The company is also
slated to release fiscal first quarter earnings on that date.
Other specifics regarding the scope of the proposed
agreement were not disclosed and spokesmen for the two
companies were not immediately available.
Shares in 3Com rose 13/16 to 47-5/16 in early morningactivity.
