Then where did postwar (WW2) US prosperity come from? The GI bill helped veterans get a house and a degree, but did it provide the prosperity that built the middle class that is now under threat? You are mixing two issues, the long-term role of the private sector and the short-term dislocations of an economic transition due to globalization. Millions of workers in emerging markets think their interests coincide with multinational manufacturers just fine and dandy. Textiles is the largest formal economic sector in Lesotho, to choose one example.
