Without any evidence at all, my initial read on all of this leads me to iran and not al quaeda or perhaps a weird alliance between the two if al quaeda is involved in any of iraq mosque attack, SA attack or Nigeria unrest.

I don't put many things past the Iranian leadership, but blowing up the Golden Dome of Samarra is one of them. That is one of Shia Islam's holiest sites. Is Ahmedinijad, said to be a believer in the Mahdi, going to okay blowing up what is said to be the Mahdi's hiding spot on earth?

But as far as Al Qaeda is concerned, the Shia are infidels anyway, so it doesn't matter. And the Baathists who are working with them seem to be convinced that they will win if they can manage to trigger a civil war.
