Campaigning in the Congo

With just three months to go until his country’s election, Oscar Kashala’s camp is gearing up for the biggest political race of his life - president of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Westborough resident doesn’t have a longstanding political career behind him. He’s been out of politics since uprisings when he was a college student in his homeland. And he doesn’t even have the clout of living in the country that he wants to lead. Instead, the doctor has built a campaign from the bottom up.

Running for president doesn’t come cheap, and Kashala expects to spend $10 million on his campaign. On a recent trip to his homeland to announce his candidacy over the winter holidays, he spent $200,000 in a week.
Kashala brings a burst of fresh air to a country that hasn’t had national elections in more than 40 years.

Along the way the senior director of clinical research at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Cambridge, has been asking poignant questions like, "Why is there so much suffering?"......
