Usually I'm like Miles in Sideways...."I am not drinking merlot", but this evening I opened a bottle of 1995 Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexander Merlot and I must say it has evolved much better than I ever thought.

It is jammy with a nice spiciness that I usually fine lacking in Merlots. If I had to give you the fruit, I'd say blueberries and blackberries. I paid about 11 bucks 8 or 9 years ago and it has been "cellared" by lying in a styrofoam shipper under my library bar. Everything about this wine is like a classic french wine. The color, the viscosity, the nose, the finish. I only regret that I do not have another bottle to open in another few years. This wine would have carried the time. Most comments about this marque would have had you open it a few years back. Just like stock advice, you can't always trust experts.

Being a widow, I shared my wine with the sunset and a nice filet grilled with a cedar plank nearby for smokiness and a simple salad of tomatoes and fresh mozarella. This is February in Florida. Tomatoes are coming into their own. MP
