SOES is a system put in place on Nasdaq after the 1987 crash as a result of a trading stand still which prevented orders from being placed. SOES was becomming increasingly popular and SOES firms began popping up all over the country. SOES traders have the ability to trade between the spread. Unlike investors that trade through brokers, SOES traders can buy at the best ask offered from the market makers. Nasdaq, however, changed the maximum shares that the market makers had to offer from 1000 to 100. This really hurt the profitability of SOES trading, and thus, it has decreased in popularity. However, if you have about a $100,000, it can be worth your while.
