ManyMoose, the point was that the USA and British Empire are not a lot different, which is quite ironical given the USA pride of their war of independence, if not the less prideful civil war which was a bit icky. One can be pedantic and say that USA vassal states aren't colonies, but that just means the distant serfs aren't allowed to move to the USA, which British Subjects in the British Empire could do [move to Great Britain].

<We are a little cranky because we had to fight for independence.>

It wasn't actually you that did any fighting at all. I think it's time to be a bit more forward-looking and forget ancient history. Why on Earth are you still cranky? I got over 1066 long ago and even 1247 isn't upsetting me enough to even know what might have happened that year. But I'm still coping with 19th century blues and will move into the 20th century shortly, when my medication kicks in to handle the emotional turmoil I've got from 1870 when the Germans came rampaging through my ancestors' happy village.

I watched the One Tree removed and it was somewhat sad = nostalgia for the good old days. But it's quite nice without a tree to obstruct the view. Unfortunately, NZers have a tree religion gaining ground, so we'll soon be worshipping a tree up there, or lots of them, complete with mystical Maori incantations to some spooks no doubt. Easter Islands had Moai, we have trees [a more primitive religion than Moai, which at least had human form]. I expect NZ will follow Easter Island's depopulation if we don't get back on track to civilisation reasonably soon.
