I don't even recall what version the Mac OS was on when we moved to Windows. If you were on a Power PC, it would've been System 7, 8 or 9. You will be pleasantly surprised to see how much more advanced OS X is. Your Apple store ought to allow you to test your Java apps on one of their demos before you buy.
