<<<the argument for gold is more purely the fiat-currencies-are-burning trade>>>

Add to this the fiat-currencies-printing argument.

<<<the bullish argument for copper, oil, etc. has more to do with the Chindia demand story.>>>

So it for gold. Look at all new wealth created in BRIC countries. First the people over there always liked and wanted gold but they were forbidden from owning or couldn't afford it. Second their central banks have amassed huge amount of USDs. They want to diversify and gold is a way to do it. Have you seen Russian and South African CB announcements about increasing their gold holdings?

How do you explain that gold in the past year has decoupled from USD and also ignored higher interest rates?

IMO gold is developing its own story. Look at huge, yes huge, additions to GLD. Supply is not growing but demand it. Contrary to oil, copper etc, if gold doubles nobody will suffer. Look for success stories about "smart" investors who bought gold while it was "cheap" below $1000. -g-
