When I was a kid the DDT truck used to come through our neighborhood and blast great clouds of DDT out the back like really thick fog. We used to ride our bikes and run along behind it, in the cloud of insecticide. Everyone KNEW DDT was harmless, and safe as houses! And maybe it was, for US.

But it DID cause drastic declines in bird populations, as it caused their eggshells to be very thin, and very few chicks were born. THAT's why we stopped using it.
