I read a recent article about Billy Gates' efforts to help fight Malaria in Africa. From it I gathered that what brought it under control in the USA was not DDT so much as large-scale mosquito control thru spraying oil on their hatching habitats (water). The South was suffering until the late 50's, which is why the Center for Disease Control is still in Atlanta. The African poor can't afford the necessary mosquito netting to keep from getting bit while sleeping. It's a pretty complex process.
