HILLSBORO, Ore. and HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1997-- Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) and Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced an alliance involving the advancement of high-performance networking technologies, products and specifications. The goal of the alliance is to further develop industry standards and to speed the deployment and evolution of new networking technologies.
The two companies will engage in technology licensing, cooperative engineering and product development. The results are expected to generate more affordable, efficient and interoperable networks for IT managers. The companies expect network interface controllers, adapters, switches, hubs, xDSL technology and remote access servers to be enhanced by this agreement.
As a result of this alliance, customers will have faster access to high-performance networking solutions based on industry standards and will be able to deploy these solutions with greater ease. Both companies share the mission to more tightly integrate clients, servers and standards-based networking components, resulting in solutions with improved performance and reduced complexity.
"With this agreement, we are delivering on our promise to provide standards-based, seamless, demystified solutions for next-generation, high-bandwidth networking," said Alan Lutz, senior vice president and group general manager, Compaq's Communication Products Group. "We're certain that this joint effort will inexorably alter the landscape of the networking marketplace."
"Intel and Compaq share a vision of matching network performance with advanced systems such as those based on Intel's high-performance Pentium(R) II processor," said Frank Gill, Intel executive vice president and general manager of the Internet and Communications Group. "Building on both companies' networking strength, the alliance combines Compaq's system and channel expertise with Intel's leadership in silicon and technology building blocks to deliver further advances for business computing."
Each company has a heritage of creating products that solve customer problems. This alliance builds on that proven track record and brings Compaq and Intel squarely into leadership positions in the networking arena. This collaboration will further magnify their strengths in bringing technology products and customer support to the market.
Both companies will work to provide customers a smooth transition from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet. Gigabit Ethernet is just one example of where the two companies plan to work together to bring high-availability networking features to the server. Another area is port aggregation, which dynamically increases bandwidth by combining multiple Fast Ethernet channels. The companies expect to announce product based on this alliance in the fourth quarter.
