Several animals besides humans (including the great apes and dolphins) are self aware as tested by the ability to recognize their image in a mirror as being themselves, and not another similar creature. That is a different thought pattern than being able to recognize a door as a door.

Self awareness in children is thought to be a product of communication with others.

I'm not familiar with any research that indicates this. Indications are that people become self aware when their genes progress to that point in their development , just as they become sexualy mature when their genes pass that point. The whole program of development does not finish playing out for perhaps 30+ years.
