Our 15'x20' water garden was full of them last year. 3/4 mile from the nearest creek and they made it up here.

We also have toads laying eggs in the pond. 2004, not one toad, bummer. 2005 had several laying eggs. Several thousands of toadlets swimming in the garden. Tiny black swarms. About mid July they become little toads, about 1/4" long and leave the pond en masse. Don't mow then. I've taken the toadlets to other bodies of water and enjoy seeing them take hold.
