Energy Security
Last Week in Prague, the NATO Energy Security Conference took place with high attendance from the military and government, looking at the security risks that could come to bear in a changing world. All the risks, especially the human-made, are increasing.
Pipelines, (LNG-)tankers, FPSO’s, but also refineries and (petro-)chemical complexes are mostly unguarded and potentially an easy target. If successful, the results can be devastating.
Another energy security risk analysis is that countries are increasingly changing the rules of the game, for which an answer is sought.
The question is though, whether a military answer to a perceived energy-security, would not be more energy- and resource intensive than that which possibly can be saved by the action.
The long-term energy security lies in the best usage of the remaining resources we have, and we should be careful how to use them.
