Kech, whether it's free-riding or not is a reasonable debate. I pay a lot of taxes in the USA, without representation [aka a vote]. Taxation without representation is an evil-doer's game, as the USA Founding Fathers said in their declaration of independence.

I expect my money to be used for something useful, such as defence of me and my interests which includes my USA investments. So, I'm already paying for the defence of NZ. Why should I pay twice?

Also, many USA companies remit large numbers of dollars to the USA from investments in New Zealand.

In a globalized world, countries aren't isolated fiefdoms in geopolitical conflict.
