Peter, I remember that cigarette tax of the early 1990s. It was obscenely confiscatory! I stocked up before the tax went into effect and was set for about 6 months.

Then in the late 1990s, another and even more obscenely confiscatory cigarette tax was approved by the loons in Sacramento, even though it had failed as a ballot initiative (which failure still amazes me).

California plays the "It's For the Children" card to the extreme because it seems to tug at the pursestrings for far too many Californians. Even the California Lottery was supposed to be "For the Children."

From the article: "The latest Census Bureau data indicate that, in 2005, 239,416 more native-born Americans left the state than moved in."
I don't doubt it. I sometimes think they have all moved to Northern Nevada. <g>

Tis true, though, that other Western states are reaping rich bounty (read taxes and businesses) from California's follies. - Holly
