Couldn't agree with you more, the fact that they're so vertically integrated is the saving grace. Without that advantage, their drives would cost significantly more than Quantum & WD's, because they're using more heads and disks to achieve a given capacity. But by being so far behind the density curve, they're leaving money on the table nonetheless. And there's no excuse for it. If WD and Quantum can do it, why can't Seagate?

Regarding spin valve heads, I've been in this business long enough to know that new technologies are typically difficult and time consuming to integrate. It's one thing to prove a concept in a controlled, laboratory environment or limited experimental builds and it's quite different to overcome the real world environmental problems, as well as to build millions with the consistency and quality necessary to make successful products. Look how long MR took to hit the mainstream. Numerous issues had to be overcome, from increased handling sensitivity to thermal asperities. I can also name numerous new breakthrough technologies that never flew. Remember wet disks? So don't bet the ranch on spin valve heads saving their butts anytime soon. It ain't that easy.
