A derivative of the principle is the description in Bonfire of the Vanities about how a bond trader makes money.

The main character's little daughter asked, "mommy, how does daddy make his money?"

Mommy replied, [and this is paraphrased], "well honey, imagine you're at a birthday party and the cake gets cut. And with each piece of cake that is given to a guest a couple little crumbs fall off. Your daddy is the guy who collects those crumbs."
