What in the world are you talking about? Exactly how much of your average day is constrained by talking to and getting permission from a government worker? What powerful social discipline are you talking about? There have always been people who are lazy, engaged in 'criminal' activity, unable or unwilling to pay their own way, etc. etc. George Bush Junior comes to mind. Who in their life doesn't need a helping hand and isn't it better that a leg up doesn't have to be based on 'charity' but on 'citizenship'? Your 'memory' of the past is quite delusional. Do you think that men always stayed with their families? Again, your vision of the world is quite old fashioned. It is brutal, cold and rather venal. Why in the world, when it isn't necessary given the resources we have, would you wish to live in such a brutish world? Why?
