I'd be for a gas tax under one provision: all the taxed money goes to RND for alternative energies, where 75% of it goes purely to startups and universities, not big oil companies. I would not be for gas tax if it goes to govt's deficit spending.

PS Congress said privately to people they didn't want to pass a tax because it screws up the consumer economic numbers, which is a big no no. (But at some point, they'll realize the dependency on gas is screwing us up in the long run, so maybe they might see the light.)
