Going down to 10 would probably mean that all the Pre Nimitz carriers would be taken out of service. We have only 9 Nimitz class carriers, but CVN77 is supposed to be commissioned in 2008.

That makes sense those pre Nimitz class ships where launched in the 60s. Ships can last a long time but they are starting to get old, and while deployments can be long we don't have a desperate need for more carriers right now.

Even if we don't go down to 10 carriers the first couple of CVN X/ CVN 21 carriers should replace the last of the pre-Nimitz carriers but it will be awhile before they go in to active service.
