I think the key takeaway from the Merrill meeting is that keeping the analysts so far in the dark actually hurts a company the size of Google. That was obvious last quarter but the Merrill meeting just solidified it.

If those analysts didn't know about the CPC optimizaton and its effect on keywords, that doesn't help anybody. At some point, either Reyes will spill the beans accidentally in an upfront, direct session like Tuesday's meeting, or the competition will bring it up, or something.

Google can still put more out there without succumbing to no forecasting for analysts.

I also think it would be ok if Google admitted that forecasting their numbers is something even they can't do. Which I believe to be the case. Vs. the alternative of making analysts think Schmidt and Reyes are trying to screw them.
