International Rectifier Introduces 97 Percent Efficient 330W Isolated DC-DC Converter Reference Design Featuring the IR2086 Full Bridge Control IC and DirectFET MOSFET Chipset

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 2, 2006--International Rectifier, IR(r) (NYSE:IRF), a world leader in power management technology, today introduced the IRDC2086-330W, a reference design featuring the IR2086S DC Bus Converter control IC and DirectFET(r) power MOSFET chipset.

The reference design simplifies development of 48V input brick or embedded power supplies for networking, communications and high-end server applications. The IRDC2086-330W is a 48V to 9.6V (35A) unregulated DC bus converter that is 97 percent efficient, in a size 30 percent smaller than industry-standard quarter brick regulators. In addition, the IRDC2086-330W reduces the number of powertrain components from three ICs and 14 FETs to a single IC and eight FETs.

The reference design chipset consists of the IR2086S primary-side, full-bridge control IC plus eight power train MOSFETs: four IRF6646 80V DirectFET primary-side MOSFETs and four IRF6635 30V DirectFET secondary-side synchronous MOSFETs. Small MOSFETs are used for bias switching (one IRF7830 80V MOSFET in an SO-8) and the secondary clamp (two IRF6621 30V Small Can DirectFET MOSFETs).

"IR's high voltage IC technology used in the IR2086S control IC works with the superb DirectFET MOSFET packaging technology to reduce primary temperature as much as 40 degrees Celsius than standard solutions for increased system reliability," said Stephen Oliver, marketing manager for SMPS Products at International Rectifier.

The IR2086S full-bridge controller operates at high frequency (programmable to 500kHz), and features an integrated soft-start capacitor that gradually increases duty cycle to 50 percent over 2000 cycles to limit in-rush current during start-up and maintains equal pulse widths for the high- and low-side MOSFETs in the full bridge throughout the start-up sequence.

The reference design includes the IRDC2086-330W fully-assembled printed circuit board, and a CD-ROM containing a User's Guide, data sheets, PCB files (Gerber, .dxf, .cad) and application notes. In addition, IR's on-line design tool, myPOWER, can be used to customize MOSFET selection to suit your application.
