Since you brushed by my initial comments re the Unions, '06 and '08 I will assume it carries no weight with you.
Actually, I didn't. I grouped all three reasons you offered into one, that whoever opposed Bush was simply catering to narrow minded self interest.
But to break it apart, take the 08 wannabes, the biggest 08 wannabe I see is McCain. And he's doing the most, in a variety of ways, to cater to the Bush folk. And, of course, he's supporting the administration. So one can argue you have narrow minded self interest supporting the Bush deal.
And then there's Frist. Who is also rumoured to be more than a little interested in 08, who opposed the deal until he talked with the WH and until Bush threatened his first ever veto, and he's now supporting the administration. One guesses it's for reasons of narrow minded self interest.
And so it goes.
At this level, who's supporting and who's opposing, it looks to me as if supporters have fastened on the commercial interests/globalization arguments; the opponents have fastened on the national security arguments. One can address them at that level.
However, for me, the most interesting part remains the way it fits into the pattern of administrative misadventures for this administration: Katrina, Dubai Ports, Iraq. When will they learn. |
